Can I be honest with you? First dates terrify me. I spend hours mentally preparing myself, running through conversation topics to bring up if there is an awkward silence. I also do a fair share of social media research on the person, but who doesn’t? I get afraid that I am going to blow it on the first date. It is easy to say “Just take a deep breath, calm down, and be yourself,” but it is not easily done. One tip, though, is to just keep in mind that it is OK if the date goes bad because this person may not be the one, and as long as you have a good time, have fun, and get to know the other person, then the date was a success! Here are the biggest mistakes people tend to make on first dates.

1. Being late: Don’t leave your date wondering if you are standing them up. That is the worst way to make a first impression!


2. Checking your phone: Our generation has a smartphone addiction problem. There is nothing ruder than implying that whatever is on your phone is more interesting or important than the person you are sitting with! Keep your phone on silent and out of sight.


3. Focusing on yourself: Keep sarcasm, negativity, and neediness away. Even if you are in a bad mood, try to put it behind you. Also, don’t focus all of the conversation on yourself and neglect your date! Try not to let your nervousness make you ramble on about yourself, I know it can be tough because I do it too!


4. Act unlike yourself: Don’t try to act like someone you aren’t just to impress your date. Don’t try and show off or be reckless, just do you.

First dates can be nerve wracking, but they can also be super fun and can turn into great relationships!
