We all learned in school that going outside and getting some vitamin D was super important for our health. There is so much more to know about this crucial vitamin, and there are so many myths about its abilities out there! Here are some common misconceptions about vitamin D and the explanations behind the myths.
Myth: If you live somewhere sunny, you don"t have to worry about vitamin D:
Even if you live in a sunny climate like California or Hawaii you still might not be getting enough vitamin D. We live in a society that spends most of our time inside or in our cars, so we barely see the light of day. Your clothes cover up most of your skin, plus the sunscreen that you wear also blocks out most of the sun rays that carry vitamin D. More on that later. So, even the most sunny populations suffer from vitamin D loss.
Myth: If you wear sunscreen you won"t get any vitamin D
Yes, it is true that good sunscreen blocks out the UVB rays that prompt your skin to produce its vitamin D. BUT, unless you are covering up every square inch of your skin, you are going to get at least some vitamin D intake. Even the tips of your fingers and the backs of your elbows can absorb the vitamin, not to fear!
Myth: You can get enough vitamin D from the foods you eat
Yes, foods like seafood and milk that are protein sources do contain some vitamin D. But unless you are willing to down multiple glasses of milk and a couple servings of salmon every day, then getting enough vitamin D in your diet is out of the picture.
Moral of the story? Spend some time outside during the day, in the shade, and get some vitamin D the natural way. It takes about 15-30 minutes for your body to absorb it"s daily vitamin D requirement, so go outside and run a mile or swim some laps!
