Summer is right around the corner, which means that sunburn season is on its way! Sometimes sunburns are hard to avoid even when you apply the proper amount of sunscreen. Running to the store to grab aloe that contains dyes and other chemicals can be annoying, especially if you have sensitive skin. Luckily, making your own aloe vera gel the all-natural way is simple and cheap! It’s time to make your own sunburn fighting gel!
All you need is an aloe plant and powdered vitamin C. Start by cutting off an outer leaf. These are usually the most mature and contain the most aloe (HINT: 1 or 2 large leaves can make almost a cup of aloe gel. Don’t cut off too many leaves!). Once you’ve cut each leaf off at the base, set them upright in a cup for 10 minutes to let the yellow resin drain out. This can be irritating to the skin! Once the leaf is fully drained, use a vegetable peeler to remove the green part of the plant. This will leave you with a clear, soft gel that can be scooped out with a spoon. Scoop out as much gel as you can and place it in a jar.
Vitamin C is a natural preserver, so adding 500mg to every ¼ cup of aloe will keep your gel fresh for up to 2 months. If you’re planning on using your aloe right away, then you can skip this step! End by mixing the gel and placing it in the refrigerator. Happy sunburn relief!
