How Often Should I Trim My Hair?

How do you know when it is time to trim your ‘do? Is it when your ends are so split and gross that they look frizzy all the time? Or is it when you start getting knots that just won’t come out, no matter how much conditioner you use? I am one of those people who waits as long as possible in between cuts because I want my hair to grow long. What I have learned is that doing that does more harm than good! Here are different hair categories and when you really need to cut it.FullSizeRender (19)

  1. If you have tight curls: For you naturally curly-haired beauties, you need to trim every 12 weeks. If you are trying to grow it out, ask your stylist to trim about a quarter of an inch or less at each cut.

  2. If your hair is untouched: And by untouched I mean un-colored or highlighted. If you have not used many chemicals on your hair and don’t use hot tools much, you can go 12 weeks in between trims.

  3. For long, wavy or straight hair: If you keep it healthy by deep conditioning and using minimal hot tools, then you can wait 8-12 weeks in between trims. If you have long layers, though, you should trim every 6-8 weeks to keep your layers in good shape.

  4. If you have a bob or lob: If you have a bob or lob (aka a long bob) you should get a trim every 6 weeks. Clean sharp lines grow out well, so you should be good. Now, if you have short or shoulder-length hair with lots of layers, then you also want to go every 6 weeks or your layers may start to look wonky.

  5. If you have short hair: If you have a pixie cut or an undercut or any other super short hairstyle, you should get it touched up every 4 weeks to keep it sharp!

Of course these are just suggestions, you can get your hair trimmed whenever you please, these are just here to help give you a guide to what salon professionals recommend!
