3 Realities You Face When You Leave Home For College

Quite a few of my friends are going away to college in the next few months, and I will be going away myself in a year! Wow, that is a scary thought. Even though you are excited and anxious to start your new life, there are a few hard realities that you get hit with early on when you move away from home and take on the world all by yourself.

1. Staying in touch with friends and family back home is not easy.

When you move away you promise your family and friends that you will keep in touch, and tell your mom you will call twice a day every day. You don"t realize how hard that really is until real life kicks in. You start class, you join College-Just-Aheadclubs, you meet friends, you get a job, all of these things start competing for your time. Before you know it, it has been a week and you haven"t called your mom! It is so important to let people back home know you are thinking of them to keep those relationships strong.

2. Grocery shopping is hard!

At home, the cupboard and fridge is always fully stocked complements of mom. In college, you have to do your own grocery shopping! Gasp! Figuring out what food is in what isle and how much food you can buy with your grocery budget all while trying to keep your meals on the healthy side is harder than you think!

3. Your roommate will eventually drive you crazy, no matter how much you like her!

Yes, roommates are great for sharing clothes and class notes and for venting your latest boy troubles, but eat sleep and breathing in the same place as them 24/7 can sometimes be a bit much. Her messy habits will start to drive you nuts, and that toothpaste clump that she clogged the sink with will make you want to scream with frustration. But, remember, you probably do things that driver her crazy too! :)

One last tidbit.. Always remember that your parents are your biggest cheerleaders and are always there when you need them. I know the hardest thing about moving out is that I will be away from my mom. It is the worst part of growing up! But, it has to happen some time, so make the best of it when it does. :)

XOXO, Chels
