College Laundry Etiquette

College Laundry Etiquette

College is full of changes, the biggest being you are living away from your parents and have to become independent (that is, if you are going away for college)! For a lot of college kids, this means that you have to start doing things like grocery shopping and doing your own laundry. Even if you did your own laundry at home, college laundry is a totally new ballgame, or so I hear. Here are some tips on how to become a college-laundry pro that I learned from my college-student buds.

  1. Do some prep work: Sort your clothes out in your room before you go down to the laundry room. It is crowded in there and having to sort it out in there can make people aggravated with you for taking up space. Sort your loads out by color before you go down to save yourself lots of trouble.e513731f00b63fac4248314b813bfddfb326b820803a96ba2d8b7dcc1d7a3a35
  2. Don’t let your laundry pile up: Procrastination is something college students are pros at, but that shouldn’t apply to laundry! You may THINK you have enough clean clothes to last you through the week, but the longer you wait, the more it will pile up, and the longer it will take you to get it done. Doing laundry makes you feel like you have your life together and relieves that small part of your mind that was worried about all of that laundry you were going to need to do.
  3. Set a timer: While your laundry is in the washer or dryer, set a timer so you don’t forget about it. Odds are, you will go back to your dorm room and start homework or eat, and forget about your laundry. Setting a timer helps you remember to go grab it and also keeps people from getting mad at you for hogging the washer when your clothes are just sitting there waiting to be moved to the dryer. Also, this is never preferable, but if you see someone’s clothes have been sitting in the washer for a long time and are done, you may need to move them. If you do, leave a note for the person telling them where you moved their clothes, whether it be to a dryer or somewhere else. You never know when you may forget to move yours, and you would want someone to show you the same courtesy.

Laundry is just a small part of college in the grand scheme of things, so don’t sweat it!

XOXO, Chels
