How to Build Your Wardrobe Part 2: Finding your personal style!

Style is a way to show people who you are without having to speak, so what do you want your style to say about you?

Now that you’ve cleaned out your closet, it’s time to fill it back up with fresh, new, fabulous things. This series isn’t just about getting new clothes; it is about having clothes in your closet that you love. This insures you will never have to go through the ‘I have nothing to wear’ monologue again. That’s why Part 2 is all about defining your personal style. When I say defining your style, I mean determining what clothing shapes and pieces work for your body and lifestyle, then going from there.

Step 1: Evaluate Your Wardrobe

Go through your ‘keep’ pile and pinpoint what works for you. Ideally, most of what’s left in your closet is things you enjoy wearing, things that fit comfortably, and items that look good on you. These will be the starters for your perfect closet.

Step 2: Assess Your Current Style

Go look at some photos of yourself! What outfits look good on you and what specific piece of the outfit was most flattering. If you do not have a lot of photos to look at, ask a close friend who will tell you the truth and get their honest opinion on what they think you look best in. Sometimes the opinion of a friend is all you need!

Step 3: Look for Inspiration

This is the most fun part of the process! This is the time to go through all of those “style” boards on Pinterest to good use! Go through magazines, check out websites, use any resource you can find. Even if the whole outfit isn’t for you, if there is a part of it that you like, save it!

Step 4: Start a Style List

Now it’s time to combine your current personal style with your inspiration images. Look at them both and determine any common elements. Do you find repeating aspects in these images & your current personal style?

By identifying what type of clothing or style you’re drawn to, it will be a lot easier to fill your closet with pieces you love! Stay tuned for the next part of the series called “Time to go shopping!”
